Loeffler: “A New Era of Trade for Georgia”

Historic USMCA Trade Deal Goes Into Effect Today

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Kelly Loeffler (R-Ga.) today released the following statement as the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) goes into effect.

“Today ushers in a new era of trade for Georgia, our nation and North America,” said Loeffler. “The USMCA will result in more jobs and opportunity for Georgia and fairer trade with Canada and Mexico. I applaud President Trump for keeping yet another promise to American manufacturers, farmers, businesses and workers, and my thanks go out to the many key players throughout the Administration and Congress who worked diligently and persistently to get this across the finish line. It is the product of joint efforts and hard work, not just across party lines, but across international lines as well. With the USMCA, Georgia will continue to be a leader in growing international trade that results in greater prosperity and opportunity on both sides of our borders.”

Background:

Loeffler is committed to building on the success of USMCA and urged the administration to address the continued importation and dumping of inexplicably cheap fruits, vegetables and tree nuts into the U.S. market from Mexico.

Loeffler has both written to and spoken with the U.S. Trade Representative’s (USTR) Chief Agriculture Negotiator Gregg Doud, urging USTR to reschedule a field hearing on the issue originally scheduled for April 9 in Valdosta, Georgia, but canceled due to public health concerns.

Loeffler considers this matter one of the most significant threats to Georgia agriculture and will continue fighting for a resolution.
