Loeffler Announces UGA to Receive $478,500 To Study and Prevent Salmonella Outbreaks

Grant will Help Prevent Losses to Poultry Industry, Improve Food Safety

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Kelly Loeffler, a member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry announced that the University of Georgia has been awarded a $478,500 grant to study salmonella detection in poultry and implement strategies to improve food safety. The grant was awarded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture’s (NIFA) Agriculture and Food Research Initiative.

“Georgia is the biggest poultry-producing state in the country and the chicken and egg industries contribute $24.6 billion to our local economy and employ more than 91,000 Georgians,” said Loeffler. “This grant will help the University of Georgia improve the understanding and detection of salmonella to reduce losses to the poultry industry, protect consumers, protect American poultry’s reputation abroad and ultimately benefit Georgia’s local economy. This is welcomed news given the new challenges Americans and the industry face as our country combats COVID-19.”
