Loeffler Announces Over $105 Million in Emergency COVID-19 Education Funding for Georgia Schools and Colleges

Funding Empowers Governor to Use Funds to Meet Local Needs

ATLANTA, GA – U.S. Senator Kelly Loeffler (R-Ga.) today announced that Georgia will receive over $105 million in emergency grants from the U.S. Department of Education to help K-12 schools and institutions of higher education impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

The emergency relief funding is made available through the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief (GEER) Fund, authorized by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The GEER Fund allocates nearly $3 billion to governors to decide how best to meet the needs of students, public schools, charter schools, non-public schools, postsecondary institutions and other education-related organizations.

“The COVID-19 public health emergency has put an enormous strain on Georgia students, families, educators and schools,” said Senator Loeffler. “Many students have felt significant disruptions in their academic and personal financial life, and these grants will empower Governor Kemp to help provide vital resources at a time of great uncertainty. This funding does not solve all of these problems, but it delivers much-needed relief for students impacted by this crisis and the communities that serve them. I applaud our state’s teachers, professors and students who have stepped up and continue to adapt to distance and other alternative learning options.”

Separately, Loeffler spoke to Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos last week and urged her to quickly release other CARES Act funding for universities and colleges.
