The Nomination Process
To be considered for an appointment to a service academy, an applicant must meet the eligibility requirements established by law and be nominated from an authorized person including a member of the United States Senate or the House of Representatives. Senator Loeffler may nominate only those applicants who are legally domiciled in the state of Georgia.
Who Is Eligible?
An applicant for a nomination must meet the following eligibility requirements as of July 1 of the year of admission to a service academy: He or she must be at least 17 years old but not have passed their 23rd birthday, must be a United States citizen, and must be unmarried, not pregnant, and have no legal obligation to support children or other dependents.
Applying for a Nomination
For more information regarding applying for a nomination from Senator Loeffler, please click here. Should you have any questions, please contact our Atlanta office at 770-661-0999. Please note that applying for a nomination from Senator Loeffler is a separate process from the application process for admission to the academies. Interested students must also apply directly to the academies in addition to applying for a nomination. Receiving a nomination is not a guarantee of admission.
Sevice Academy Nomination ApplicationThe application will be available in April.
There are five service academies: The United States Air Force (USAFA), Naval (USNA), Military (USMA), Merchant Marine (USMMA), and Coast Guard (USCGA) Academies. Nominations are required for all but the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, to which appointments are made on the basis of an annual nationwide competition.
For the USAFA, USNA and USMA, each eligible young person may apply to both United States Senators from their home state, his or her United States Representative, and the Vice President. The nomination and appointment process is very competitive. Interested persons should apply through all sources for which they are eligible. An individual may be nominated by more than one nominating authority and/or to more than one academy. Please visit the academies’ web sites for further information and eligibility requirements.
For both a nomination and/or admission to a military academy, a nominee’s academic record, extracurricular and athletic activities, physical aptitude, ACT and/or SAT scores, leadership ability and medical qualifications are taken into consideration. NOTE: No person will be offered admission if he or she does not meet the physical standards of the academy unless awarded a medical waiver.
Please visit the web sites listed to the right for each academy to determine entrance requirements. You may apply online to each academy in which you are interested. If you meet the minimum eligibility requirements, the academies will send a candidate package to you. You should return all requested materials to the academies as soon as possible. If the academy considers you to be an “official candidate,” you will be scheduled for a medical examination by the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board. You must also complete the Candidate Fitness Assessment and include a copy of this with your application to our office.
